Haridwar police prepare for Kanwad Mela

Monday, 04 July 2022 | PNS | Haridwar

The deputy inspector general and Haridwar senior superintendent of police Yogendra Singh Rawat presided over a review meeting regarding preparations for the Kanwad Mela slated to begin later this month. Various problems that may arise during the event and other aspects including removal of shortcomings were discussed in the meeting. The field officers concerned were directed to solve the problems swiftly by establishing communication with the administrative officers.

Rawat said that there may be three potential issues which have been experienced in past Kanwad Melas also. The most sensitive aspect is the communal aspect during the event. Every police station in-charge has to be fully prepared to ensure that peace and order is maintained as even seemingly minor issues have the potential to escalate in events of faith like the Kanwad Mela. In case of any minor incident or doubt of threat to communal harmony, the police should act immediately and resolve the situation.

Secondly, in road accidents involving Kanwadiyas, the situation escalates if swift action is not taken. The police officer concerned must take swift action so that the crowd and movement of Kanwadiyas do not affect the peace and order. Thirdly, when a large number of Kanwadiyas does not adhere to the route diversions made for them, they tend to argue with the police and demand to be allowed on the route of their choice. In such a situation, the police force should take every possible step to ensure smooth movement of Kanwadiyas on their designated path, said Rawat.
