Rejecting allegations of ill treatment of stray cattle sheltered at Kanji House, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has decided to take action against those spreading disinformation with the intention to malign the corporation’s image. Various photos and videos were making rounds on social media on Friday which were showing some cows in extremely poor conditions in Kanji House. Some had serious wounds while some appeared dead in the videos. Some photos and videos were also circulated in which a dog was eating a cow’ carcass. Congress spokeswoman Garima Dasauni who visited Kanji House on Thursday also accused MCD of poorly treating cattle at the shelter. She also claimed that the floors of the animal sheds are filled with mud. This matter created a stir throughout the day among senior municipal officials. Talking on the matter, mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said that the video of a dog eating a cow’s carcass is from last year, which is being circulated as a recent clip by many. He claimed that the location shown in the video is not Kanji House. The municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal also said that the wounded and dead cattle shown in some videos are the ones rescued by the corporation. He said that MCD also rescues severely injured animals regularly from across the city and brings them to Kanji House for treatment. Sometimes, some of them die due to injuries but some people have presented it as if the corporation treats them poorly. Speaking about the matter in detail, the senior municipal veterinary officer Dr DC Tiwari said that cattle presented as ill treated animals in the video were rescued from different areas of the city like Badowala, Raipur, Premnagar highway, Kandoli, Balawala, Donali Chowk and Ajabpur Kalan in the past one week. Most of them were badly sick and wounded and some of them succumbed to their injuries which is a normal occurrence with stray and abandoned animals. He said, “This was presented by Dasauni as the poor treatment by MCD through photos and videos. Also, the whole city is witnessing heavy rainfall due to which, the floors sometimes become muddy. Dasauni focused on just one part of the Kanji House where some sick and wounded animals were present. Why other parts of shelter were not shown where about 400 cattle are given sheltered?” He said that MCD condemns actions of making photos and videos viral that spread disinformation among the public.  He said that the matter will be investigated and soon an FIR will also be lodged against the guilty party in the case.
