The government will soon start providing benefits of Mukhyamantri Mahalakshmi Kit Yojana (MMKY) to the mothers of newly born sons. The benefits of this scheme are currently being provided on the birth of the first two daughters. This was stated by the Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) minister Rekha Arya during an event organised under the Poshan Maah campaign of the Central Government. A baby shower of pregnant women was also organised at the event where Arya also distributed nutrition kits to malnourished women besides distributing kits to the beneficiaries of MMKY. She said the distribution of kits under MMKY was started to support the birth of girl child in the State, which also supports other associated schemes of the government like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Nanda Gaura Yojana that are run to support the interests of the girl child. She said that women are given kits worth Rs 3,500 on the birth of the first two daughters under MMKY. The kits include items like dry fruits, items of clothing, soaps and bed sheets among other necessary items that can be used by new mothers and daughters. The government will soon provide all these benefits on the birth of the first son too, said Arya. Talking about Poshan Maah, the WECD minister said that the main objective of this programme is to identify malnourished children and make the parents of such children aware of proper diet and all associated factors. It will help the parents to understand food better to cater to the nutritional needs of their children as malnourishment can cause several issues for them in future. She informed that Anganwadi workers are also going door to door to make everyone aware of malnutrition among women and children and how it can be avoided.
