The police had an encounter with a robbery accused Manoj Sihori (38) on the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh border near the Asharodi area late on Thursday. The accused was shot in the leg and has been admitted to the hospital. He along with his gang had robbed a jeweller in Rishikesh on Monday night when he was going home. He was coming to Dehradun late on Thursday to carry out a robbery here too, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He said that the Rishikesh police team was conducting an investigation into the robbery case. They found during the investigation that the accused and his accomplice belong to Meerut and a team was sent there to gather more information about them.

The team learnt in Meerut that Sirohi had been planning another robbery in Dehradun in the next few days. Considering this, the police started intensive checking in border areas. When the police signalled a motorcycle rider coming from Saharanpur to stop late on Thursday, he tried to turn his motorcycle. The police started chasing him and he left his motorcycle on the road and ran towards the forest in the Asharodi area while firing several shots at the police. He was shot in the leg when the police fired in self defense. The police admitted him to the hospital for treatment, the SSP said. The police recovered one country-made pistol, one live cartridge and a jewellery piece, among other items. He stated that the accused had confessed to being involved in the Rishikesh robbery case. He and his accomplice Mohit had stolen a motorcycle from Haridwar a day before carrying out the robbery in Rishikesh on Monday.

Singh said that Sihori is a vicious criminal who is involved in several serious crimes in other States too. The police are seeking his criminal history from the authorities concerned. Several police teams have also been sent to all possible places to arrest the other robber. The investigation is ongoing, he added.
