An associate professor in general medicine at the Government Doon Medical College has tendered her resignation in protest against the allegedly high handed behaviour of the Health secretary. Dr Nidhi Uniyal sent her resignation while also requesting action against the secretary concerned. She tendered her resignation soon after she was transferred from GDMC to Soban Singh Jeena government medical and sciences college in Almora.

In her resignation letter, Dr Uniyal states that she was asked to attend the ailing wife of the Health secretary Pankaj Pandey. “With due regards to the health secretary, I visited his residence with two of my hospital staff, leaving my running OPD and kept a number of patients waiting in the hospital. I visited her residence and examined her duly and as the BP instrument was left in the car, arrival of the BP instrument was delayed, the wife of the health secretary resorted to usage of unpleasant words demeaning to my profession and conduct, to which I objected, felt bad and came back. Upon my return, I was asked to tender an apology to the secretary’s wife. As I am not at fault, I refused to tender an apology. This is kind of toxic and I am a qualified and trained doctor from India’s premier medical colleges.Given this harassment at the behest of the Health secretary, I hereby resign from my post of associate professor with a plea that action must be initiated against the secretary concerned,” wrote Dr Uniyal in her resignation letter.
