Gang steals jewellery using gas cutters in Dehradun

Even as the police are yet to arrest all the accused of the gang involved in the daylight robbery of Reliance Jewels in Dehradun, another gang committed theft from a jewellery store in Selaqui on Wednesday. Police and forensic teams were also at the spot to analyse the crime scene including the lockers.

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the thieves attempted to break the lockers using a gas cutter but they could not do it. Though the main locker is yet to be opened, it appears that thieves’ attempt to steal jewellery from it was unsuccessful, he said. According to him, the gang entered the shop from the roof and reportedly used the gas cutter to cut every door of the three-storey building to steal jewellery. According to the shop owner’s son Mayank Sindhi, he went to his shop on Wednesday around 9 AM to get his phone charger.

He told The Pioneer, “Since all shops remain closed in the Selaqui area on Wednesday, I just went there to get my charger but when I opened the shop, I noticed damaged doors and lockers which were done using gas cutters. Nearly one kilogramme of silver jewellery and other light weighing jewellery pieces which were kept on display for customers were also stolen.” He said that the damaged lockers are yet to be opened. “Such lockers shut themselves on any unusual activity. This might be the reason the gang members could not steal jewellery from them. We were also unable to open them so we called an engineer concerned to open the lockers. He is expected to come on Thursday. The lockers will be opened in the presence of the police,” said Sindhi. He said that he along with other local businessmen are not concerned about the stolen jewellery but about the attempt the gang made in a shop situated in the main market area. “They had come fully prepared with a gas cutter and knew how to enter the building.

They shut down all CCTV and took the digital video recorder (DVR) to ensure they did not get caught. I think it took them considerable time to cut all doors and then lockers using gas cutters due to which they could not open the main locker. I suspect that if I had not opened my shop to get my charger back on the weekly off, the gang would have tried to steal jewellery again at night. I hope the police nab them soon,” he said. The SSP said that some similar incidents have also recently happened in areas like Haridwar and Kashipur where gangs used gas cutters to steal money from ATMs. The police are getting details about both cases to know whether there is any connection among these cases. The police teams are investigating the case and will nab all accused soon, added Singh.
