MCD gears up for its first MRF construction

Monday, 21 February 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is gearing up to build its first Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at the Kargi garbage transfer station for effective waste management. The corporation is planning to commence the construction work from the next month as per the officials. An MRF is generally used to recycle non-biodegradable materials like glass, leather, cardboard, plastic materials, clothes and others which can also generate revenue for the corporation.

The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ recently conducted a surprise inspection of the transfer station where MRF is proposed to be established and checked out the arrangements by the authorities concerned. Since the processing of the segregated garbage is easy in MRF, he also enquired about the quantity of segregated waste received through door to door garbage collection and for how many hours the garbage stays at the transfer station before it is transferred to the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada.

Proper garbage disposal has become one of the main sanitation issues of they city and since the corporation has set a target to get a position in the top 50 cleanest cities in the country under Swachchh Survekshan 2022 (SS22), the officials have started taking initiatives for the disposal of the garbage which is among the main categories of the survey. The city got only one star rating in the Garbage Free City (GFC) category last year but as per the officials, getting a three or five star rating would easily move Dehradun closer to the top 50 ranking, provided the city retains scores in other categories like the last year.

Considering this, the corporation has decided to establish an MRF centre in Kargi where the garbage collected from 15 rural wards will be processed for proper disposal rather than transferring it to the waste management plant on a daily basis. A municipal official also informed that the construction of MRF can also help MCD to score extra points in SS22.

The mayor said that the MCD is presently planning the construction of MRF which will possibly commence from the next month. He also said that waste segregation at source will immensely help in the disposal of the garbage and the corporation is taking all initiatives to raise awareness among the locals to adopt this practice too. He appealed to the locals to segregate their trash before dumping it and contribute to keeping the city clean.
