The State government has rescued a total of 7,670 child beggars under operation Mukti in different parts of the State since 2017. In response to a question by the Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh the Parliamentary Affairs minister Prem Chand Agarwal told the house on Thursday that 3,603 of the rescued children were admitted in schools. He said that the State had adopted the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Beggary Act in the year 2017 which bans beggary in the State.

He said that the State has only one Bhikshuk Grah (shelter for beggars) at Roshnabad in Haridwar district and it has a capacity to keep only 200 beggars. The minister accepted that begging is a social menace. The BJP MLA Munna Singh Chauhan said that there is a possibility that some organised begging gang is operating in the State.
