Chief secretary SS Sandhu has stressed on the need for efforts for revival of rivers in the State. Stating that a separate authority needs to be established to save the rivers, he directed that district and State level authorities should be established for this purpose. He said this while chairing a meeting on saving the rivers and measures like construction of check dams here on Friday.

Sandhu said that to save rain fed rivers work needs to be done from their source to the border of the State. Irrigation, Minor Irrigation department, Watershed department and Forest department need to work together to ensure effective work on this aspect. A dedicated cell should be formed to regularly monitor this work. Sandhu further said that the Forest and Irrigation departments should build as many check dams as possible in their respective areas as this will improve the groundwater level. Work needs to be done consistently through measures like construction of check dams and tree plantation, he added. Forester DS Meena gave a presentation on steps taken for revival of Henwal river in Tehri district. Appreciating it, Sandhu said that a concept paper should be prepared on how to implement such efforts across the State.

Additional chief secretary Anand Bardhan, secretaries BVRC Purushottam, HC Semwal and others were also present in the meeting.
