Excavator operator arrested for killing man after dispute

Police arrested the man from Haryana late on Monday on charges of crushing a young man to death by the bucket of an excavator late on Saturday on the Gumkhal-Satpuli road near Kotdwar after a dispute.

The Pauri senior superintendent of police Lokeshwar Singh said that around 11:30 PM on June 7, Suman Devrani was travelling with a companion from Gumkhal to Satpuli. At Malli Satpuli, where road-cutting work was underway, a dispute occurred between Devrani and the machine operator regarding the opening of the road.

During the altercation, the operator attacked Devrani with the machine’s bucket, resulting in his death. The operator, identified as Praveen Singh Barthwal, a resident of Chunar, Marwadi, Joshimath in Chamoli district, fled the scene after the incident, as per the SSP. He informed that the case was registered at Satpuli police station under section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The SSP said that the additional superintendent of police of Kotdwar Chandra Mohan Singh and deputy superintendent of police Sadar Trivendra Singh Rana supervised the investigation and station officer Satpuli Jagmohan Singh Ramola led multiple police teams formed for the operation. The teams collected technical and forensic evidence from the scene. “Using surveillance and manual tracking, police traced the accused Barthwal to Haryana and arrested him in Yamunanagar within hours. He was presented in court for legal proceedings on Tuesday,” he added.
