MCH to make recharge pits to tackle waterlogging

Saturday, 29 July 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Considering the chaos caused by the heavily waterlogged roads of the city during the ongoing monsoon, the Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) will create 20 recharge pits in vulnerable locations. The corporation has presently identified 13 such locations where these recharge pits will be formed.  These locations are Krishnanagar, Ramleela Ground, Chamgadad Tapu, Pantdeep Parking, and Bairagi Camp. Mastram Gali, Kumhar Gad, Latowali, Dudhiya Band, near Saint Mary school, Sethiwali and Sandeshnagar.

The municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati said that each recharge pit will cost around Rs six lakh and the MCH is currently planning to create 20 pits which will cost nearly Rs 1.2 crore. He said that the idea is to provide room for water to recede so that it does not accumulate on the road and will protect vulnerable areas from waterlogging. These pits will allow the rainwater to replenish groundwater by recharging the underground aquifers.

He said that the teams have surveyed all the vulnerable locations and the corporation will soon float tenders to ensure the work can be commenced as soon as possible. He said that this work is being done as a pilot project and the corporation will create more pits in future as per the requirement.
