The vice chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Women’s Commission (USWC) Jyoti Sah Mishra has ordered officials concerned to take action against chemists selling abortion medicine without doctor’s prescription in Almora district. Mishra inspected the district women hospital in Almora on Friday. She found several irregularities during her inspection. She inspected the hospital premises with the chief medical superintendent (CMS) of the hospital Dr Preeti Pant and expressed her disappointment over substandard cleanliness and food quality provided to the patients. She also interacted with patients and asked for their feedback on the facilities they are being provided in the hospital. Mishra directed the CMS to work hard on improving the conditions of the hospital in order to provide the best medical facilities to each patient, especially pregnant women. She asked the officials concerned to coordinate with the private contractor responsible for catering in the hospital to ensure quality food. She also directed the district food safety officer to regularly check the quality of food being served in the hospital.  Mishra also discussed the issue of increasing use of abortion medicine among women without any medical consultation with the CMS Dr Pant. Pant informed her that many pregnant women are brought in serious condition to the hospital as they do not consult with doctors before taking any abortion medicine. Mishra talked to the drug inspector about the issue and directed him to take action on such chemist shops that sell such medicines to people without a doctor’s prescription.
