The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) claimed that during an inspection which was conducted by the district task force, child labour cases were found to be less compared to the past years. The inspection was conducted ahead of Deepawali to rescue children working in cracker manufacturing factories in Dehradun. SCPCR member Vinod Kaparwan informed that the chances of child labour in cracker manufacturing factories tend to increase ahead of Deepawali. In order to address this issue, the commission has directed the district task force to conduct inspections, particularly in industrial areas, to prevent child labour, he added. Kaparwan said that the district task force informed the commission that no children were found working at the cracker manufacturing units. However, the district task force did report finding two to three children working in mechanical and other shops. Regarding the decrease in child labour in cracker manufacturing units Kaparwan said, “The commission was able to rescue 20 to 30 children working in cracker manufacturing units last year. However, this year’s rate of child labour has reduced significantly due to increased awareness among parents about the dangers of working in such places. The commission will take strict action against anyone who is found employing children across the State.”
