Sale of Garhwali-Hindi dictionary launched by Culture department remains low

Wednesday, 27 December 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The sale of the Garhwali-Hindi dictionary, which was launched by the Culture Department with the aim of promoting and conserving the Garhwali language, has remained consistently low since its launch in 2014. The officials of the Culture department informed that to promote the Garhwali language and conserve it the Culture department had launched the Garhwali-Hindi dictionary for the public in the year 2014.

The officials further added that the dictionary, consisting of 748 pages was made available for purchase at a price of Rs 1000. Initially, 500 sets of the dictionary were released in 2014, however, as of 2023, only 172 books have been sold. The official attributed the low sales to the easy accessibility to the meaning of words through online platforms like Google and a lack of awareness among the public regarding the existence of the dictionary.

He further stated that instead of searching for words on the internet, consulting a dictionary would yield more knowledge. To purchase the said dictionary, individuals must visit the Culture department, while for reading purposes, they can visit the library of the department, he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the department has been understaking various measures to promote and preserve the regional language of Garhwali. The department has also planned to resume dialect language training classes at the Himalayan Culture Centre (HCC), which have been delayed for several months due to unavoidable circumstances.
