The Dehradun district magistrate Sonika has issued an order to sub divisional magistrates (SDMs) and district excise officers to conduct surprise inspections of the factories situated in the district after getting complaints of exploitation of labourers and workers in a public hearing on Monday.

The DM received 69 complaints in the public hearing which mainly included matters related to land encroachment,  getting houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), non-payment of dues of workers, pension dues and dues of retired people among others. The DM also received a complaint that many labourers are compelled to do overtime in several factories and do not even get properly paid for it. The factory owners exploit them on a daily basis as per the complainant.

Considering this, the DM directed the SDMs and district excise officer to conduct surprise inspections of factories in their respective areas in association with the officials of the labour department to monitor the working conditions of the workers. She directed the officials concerned to take strict action against such factory owners that are found to be exploiting their workers in any way. Sonika also directed the officials concerned to ensure medicines are not unnecessarily being prescribed from private chemist shops in government hospitals on the complaints of locals. She ordered the SDMs to conduct surprise inspections of the government hospitals in their respective areas.

Besides this, she also directed the officials to determine routes for the vehicles involved in mining works. She also directed the officials concerned to remove the electric wires hanging from electric poles across the district to avoid any possible accidents.
