District hospital bars doctors from prescribing outside medication

The administration of Deen Dayal Upadhyay district hospital has issued an order to all its doctors instructing them not to prescribe any medication to patients from outside the hospital. This directive was prompted by recent incidents wherein some doctors reportedly prescribed medications to patients from outside the facility.
Notably, these prescriptions were also not stamped with the doctors’ approval. Informing about this, the medical superintendent of the district hospital Dr VS Chauhan informed that the Health department directed the hospital administration to temporarily deploy several doctors to other hospitals in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to promote winter tourism in Uttarakhand. As part of this, one orthopedic surgeon was temporarily assigned to Uttarkashi, along with a few other doctors, including a physician and a cardiologist, to Jolly Grant hospital.
To maintain operations in the outpatient department (OPD), postgraduate doctors in training were asked to manage the OPD for two to three days. However, these PG doctors have less experience, which has contributed to the confusion around prescribing medications to patients outside the hospital.
Chauhan also said that PG doctors are not required to stamp prescriptions with the hospital’s approval. Following this incident, the administration has taken strict measures to ensure compliance and has reiterated that no doctor should prescribe medications to patients outside the hospital. Moreover, in cases where certain medications are unavailable at the hospital, doctors have been instructed to prescribe medications from the Jan Aushadhi, where medicines are offered at very low prices, he said.
Dr Chauhan emphasised the importance of regular inspections at the hospital to ensure that no doctor prescribes medications outside the facility. He stated that strict action would be taken against any doctor found violating this order.
