District administration to start GIS mapping for development projects

The Dehradun district administration will conduct a survey through mapping under Geographic Information System (GIS) in order to facilitate the provision of basic facilities in rural areas and monitor the availability of already existing services.

Initially, this survey would be done only in the selected villages under Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAGY). According to the chief development officer (CDO), Nitika Khandelwal, the mapping of buildings like health care centres, Anganwadi centres and schools would help the administration to focus on the areas where the development works need more attention. She said that initially, the administration will only conduct the survey through GIS mapping in only 17 Gram Panchayats under PMAGY. She stated that these villages in which most of the population belongs to scheduled caste were selected by the Central Government under PMAGY.

Moreover, CDO informed that the administration also gets regular demand for the solar lights from the Gram Panchayats and through the GIS mapping, the administration can know where the lights are actually required. “Through GIS mapping, we can know about the availability of electricity in a particular area of a village. If a village has the facility of electricity connection, it does not require solar lights. This way, the Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (UREDA) will allot solar lights to those villages where the electricity connection is not available yet,” said Khandelwal. She asserted that GIS mapping will assist the administration to focus on commencing the significant development projects in the selected villages under PMAGY.

CDO added that all the officials concerned have been directed to finish the development projects within the given time in the selected Gram Panchayats.
