Police warn of action against commercial establishments encroaching on footpaths

Stating that various commercial establishments in Dehradun are not following basic traffic rules, the traffic police have initiated action against such establishments under the Police Act and various sections of Indian Penal Code. The police claimed that many establishments like malls and hotels do not allow customers to park vehicles in their respective premises and many have even encroached on footpaths or a portion of road causing traffic congestion across the city.

Taking cognisance of such violations, the police acted against three hotels of the city on Thursday under the Police Act. The superintendent of police (traffic) Akshay Konde said that the police are making constant efforts to streamline the traffic system in the Dehradun city but some vehicle operators, hotel operators and shopping complex owners are not providing their full cooperation to the traffic police. They are allowing parking of vehicles on roads outside their establishments rather than within their premises as per the rules which has become one of the prominent causes of traffic congestion in several main roads of the city.

The traffic police took action against such three hotels on Thursday under the Police Act and were given proper instructions to make proper parking arrangements and remove encroachments, added Konde. He said that the police will also start raising awareness campaigns among such establishments regarding such violations. Those who will continue to flout the norms will have to face legal consequences under several relevant acts, said the SP. “Many have been questioning why authorities are acting against encroachments on footpaths by vegetable vendors with their carts but not other commercial establishments. We are actually gearing up to act against such bodies too. We have marked such establishments like a five-star hotel in the Jakhan area that has encroached a footpath. The police will soon act against such violations,” added Konde.
