Demand for OPS restoration gathers momentum

Buoyed by the success of the pension marches organised in all the 13 districts of the State on April 16, the Uttarakhand unit of the National Movement for Old Pension Scheme (NMOPS) has started preparing for the Delhi mega rally. The rally will be held on October 2 this year. The president of NMOPS, Uttarakhand Jeetmani Painyuli said that the organisation has started preparing for the Delhi rally. He said the NMOPS would also organise Pension Rath Yatras in all parts of the State in the month of June. He claimed that the programme on April 16 was unprecedented in terms of attendance and representatives of more than 50 associations and 10 employee federations took part in it. Painyuli said that only OPS would provide social security to the employees and would give a chance to lead a life of dignity after retirement.

The New Pension Scheme (NPS) was started in the year 2004 to reduce the burden of pension on the State exchequer. The employees are now finding the NPS non lucrative and are demanding the restoration of OPS in which the retiring employee gets 50 per cent of his last drawn salary as pension. In the OPS the employees also get the benefit of Dearness Allowance (DA), family pension and commutation.  Under the pressure of the employee associations, the State governments of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have dismantled the NPS and restored the OPS for their employees.
