NSUI members stage protest march over rising unemployment

The student wing of Congress party, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) staged a strong protest on the issue of unemployment in the provisional state capital Dehradun on Friday. The protesters even tried to march to the chief minister’s residence, but was prevented by a strong contingent of the police from doing so. The in charge of the Uttarakhand Congress Devendra Yadav, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh, former chief minister Harish Rawat and other senior leaders of the party attended the protest march to support the students.

Earlier in the day, large number of the students gathered at Rajiv Bhawan from where they marched to the CM’s residence. However the students were stopped by the police personnel at Hathibadkala barrier. Here minor skirmish between the students and the police took place. Speaking on the occasion the national president of NSUI, Neeraj Kundan said that the state government has no policy to provide unemployment to the youth. He said that in search of employment the youth from Uttarakhand had to migrate to other states. The President of Uttarakhand unit of NSUI, Mohan Bhandari said that large numbers of posts are lying vacant in different departments of the state. The Congress leaders and NSUI activists subsequently courted arrest. They were taken to the Police Lines where they were released later.
