MCD receives Rs 50 lakh property tax on Vidhan Sabha building

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) finally got the property tax of the Vidhan Sabha building for the last six years which is worth around Rs 50 lakh. The corporation has been struggling to get the property tax of the buildings of the government, non-government and aided organisations since 2016 and it is yet to collect the tax of about Rs 12-15 crore from such bodies. In the last two years, the corporation had set the target of collecting the revenue of Rs 50 crore as property tax but it could not be achieved due to the Covid-19 pandemic as claimed by the officials. This financial year, the MCD has collected the property tax of over Rs 30 crore so far and if the remaining such organisations will pay the taxes, the corporation will be quite near the target. There are about 1.10 lakh properties registered in the corporation out of which, about 15 per cent of properties are non-residential properties which generate more revenue for the MCD than the residential properties. The municipal tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly informed that about 70,000 people have submitted the tax out of these 1.10 lakh property owners which is a better number than the previous years. He said that since the corporation will start imposing penalties on those who would fail to deposit the taxes by the end of this month, the number of taxpayers depositing taxes has increased in the MCD premises. He said that the corporation has sent the bills to many non-residential properties and hopefully, more such property owners will submit taxes in MCD. Only ten days are left in this financial year after which, the corporation will start making a list of defaulters to impose penalties for not submitting taxes on time, added Painuly.
