Stating that encroachments on the land of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is increasing day by day, some councillors demanded the corporation to make the records of the government land marked across the city. The councillor of Salawala ward along with others staged a protest in the premises of the MCD on Monday against the alleged encroachment by land mafia across the city. Interestingly, most of the councillors involved in the protest are from BJP who are protesting against the alleged inactiveness of the corporation and its senior authorities in the encroachment issues including BJP leader and the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’. Kathaith said, “Encroachments on government lands is a big issue. Not just us but even the public want to know whether the MCD has actually marked its land in all wards. If no then why not and if yes, how many lands are actually under the corporation in each ward? We want to know how land mafia are able to acquire government lands despite the responsible authorities like municipal commissioner, district magistrate and others. The MCD should investigate how pieces of land worth crores of rupees are being encroached by land mafia. Why is no action being taken against the municipal officials involved in such cases?” He said that they only want the officials concerned to take action on the matter and have conveyed the same to the mayor as well as the commissioner. “We will be bound to resume our protest if the MCD fails to take action on the issue,” said the councillor.
