In protest against what they termed disproportionate assets earned by Mayor Sunil Uniyal Gama, providing ownership rights to slum dwellers and imposition of commercial tax in new wards, the Congress workers held a vehement protest at the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Wednesday. The protesters were led by the president of Mahanagar Congress Jaswinder Singh Gogi.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that MCD has foisted commercial tax in 40 newly added wards while at the time of their formation it was assured by the State cabinet that there would be a tax exemption for a period of 10 years. He said that the Congress government had decided that slums would be regularised but this decision has not been implemented as yet. Gogi demanded that the decision should be implemented without any further delay so that slum dwellers get ownership rights. Launching an attack on Mayor Gama, the Congress leader said that the income of the traders, workers and others is getting reduced due to financial mismanagement of BJP government and decisions such as demonetisation, it is surprising that the assets of Mayor and other BJP leaders is increasing at an extraordinary manner. He said that the BJP should share this mantra of making money with the general public.

The Congress workers also raised slogans against the Mayor and said that his assets have increased 10 times in the last four years. The vice president of Uttarakhand Congress Surya Kant Dhasmana said that the entire city is in pathetic condition, traffic jams are rampant and roads are dug but the triple engine government is continuing to pat its back. Senior leader Godavari Thapli said that the workers of the Congress party would continue to fight on the issues of interests of the people of the city.
