Kandwal to inspect public & pink toilets on Yatra routes

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairwoman Kusum Kandwal will begin inspecting the public and pink toilets set up on the Char Dham Yatra routes. Recently, Kandwal emphasised the importance of pink toilets to improve the convenience for women in public areas, stressing the necessity for cleanliness to avoid any discomfort for female pilgrims during the Yatra.

She pointed out that although many public toilets have been built, they frequently fail to operate effectively or maintain adequate hygiene. Additionally, there is a shortage of facilities specifically for women, which presents various challenges and heightens the risk of health problems due to unsanitary conditions. In light of these concerns, she has directed all district magistrates to either construct new pink toilets in important public areas and along Yatra routes or ensure that the existing ones are functioning properly.

Talking to The Pioneer, Kandwal stated that she intends to begin inspections of toilets along the Yatra route within the next two to three days. The criteria for these inspections will focus on hygiene and the availability of essential items for women. She said she will commence inspections in Rishikesh and Muni Ki Reti, with plans to extend to additional Yatra routes.

During these inspections, apart from pink toilets, public toilets used by men and senior citizens will also be evaluated to ensure that pilgrims do not encounter hygiene-related issues during the Yatra. Kandwal emphasised that if any toilets are found to be dirty or inadequately maintained along the route, she will ensure that strict actions are taken.

Earlier, while she issued directions to all the DM’s, she also added that the pink toilets established along the yatra route should be equipped with essential amenities.
