The Uttarakhand unit of the National Movement for Old Pension Scheme (NMOPS) has initiated a drive to further strengthen its organisation. In the meeting held on Tuesday, a resolution to reorganise and revamp all the block units of the NMOPS was passed unanimously. The meeting was chaired by the president of the Uttarakhand NMOPS.

In the meeting the vice president Jagmohan Rawat said that a massive agitation would be launched soon  on the demand for restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in Uttarakhand. The secretary Mukesh Raturi exhorted the members to remain prepared for the agitation for OPS restoration. In his address the president Jeetmani Painyuli said that all the members should work in a united manner to achieve the objective of the OPS. He said a membership drive would be undertaken in the State and preparation for a mega agitation would be undertaken.

There are more than 80,000 employees, teachers and officers who are currently under the New Pension Scheme (NPS). The NPS was started in the year 2004 to reduce the ever increasing burden of pension on State exchequer.  Under it a portion of the salary of the employees is deducted every month and the government makes an equal contribution. This is invested in different debt and equity instruments to build up a corpus for the employee and on his or her retirement he or she receives the pension from the interest incurred from the corpus. The employees are finding the NPS non-lucrative and are demanding the restoration of OPS in which the retiring employee gets 50 per cent of his last drawn salary as pension. In the OPS the employees also get the benefit of Dearness Allowance (DA), family pension and commutation.
