Five-day spell of rain and snowfall to start in State on Sunday

After a spell of comparatively warm and sunny days, the State is set to experience a five-day spell of rain and snowfall from Sunday. The State meteorological centre has informed that current meteorological analysis and numerical weather prediction models indicate that an active western disturbance with induced cyclonic circulation is likely to affect Uttarakhand from February 18 to 22. Under the influence of this system, rain/snowfall/thunderstorms are very likely to occur from February 18 to 22 with peak activity on February 19 and 20 in the State.

According to the meteorological centre, light to moderate rain/snowfall/thunderstorms are very likely to occur at isolated places in the State on Sunday while snowfall is likely to occur at places situated at altitudes of 3,500 metres and above on the same day. Most places in Uttarakhand are likely to witness light to moderate rain/snowfall/thunderstorms on February 19 and 20. Light to moderate rain/snowfall/thunderstorms are very likely to occur at many places on February 21 and 22.

Further, snowfall is likely to occur in places located at altitudes of about 2,800 metres and above on February 19 and at places situated at altitudes of 2,500 metres and above from February 20 to 22. A yellow warning has been issued for February 18 regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied with hail/lightning likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun and Uttarkashi districts and thunderstorms accompanied with lightning likely to occur at isolated places in Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts. An orange warning has been issued for February 19 regarding the possibility of heavy to very heavy snowfall likely to occur at isolated places located at altitudes of 3,000 metres and above in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts and thunderstorm accompanied with hail/lightning likely to occur at isolated places in the State. A yellow warning has been issued for the same day regarding the possibility of heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts. Further, an orange warning has been issued for February 20 regarding the possibility of heavy snowfall likely to occur at isolated places situated at altitudes of 2,800 metres and above in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts and for thunderstorm accompanied with hail/lightning likely to occur at isolated places in the State. A yellow warning has been issued for February 21 and 22 regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied with lightning likely to occur at isolated places in the State.

On Saturday, the State is forecast to witness dry weather.
