The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department has refuted allegations that it is providing inferior quality sanitary napkins to women through Anganwadi workers. Recently, WECD instructed Anganwadi workers to distribute sanitary napkins to women across the state. However, the president of the Anganwadi Workers Association Rekha Negi expressed her concerns about the added responsibility that requires Anganwadi workers to transport the cartons to remote areas. She stated that village women are uninterested in buying these sanitary napkins due to their inferior quality.

Entrepreneur Development Officer at WECD department Ravi Melwan refuted claims of the sanitary napkins being inferior. He stated that the scheme for providing sanitary napkins to women through Anganwadi workers has been successful, especially in remote areas. Women living in remote areas rely on sanitary napkins provided by the department through Anganwadi workers. He said that the success of the scheme shows that the sanitary napkins provided to women in the State are of superior quality. Anganwadi workers sell the sanitary napkin packet for Rs six, out of which Re one is reimbursement to the workers, he added.  Commenting on the programme related to menstrual hygiene, Melwan said that the department organises an awareness programme annually on International Girl Child Day. During the programme, teenage girls and women from the State are educated about menstrual hygiene. Additionally, free packets of sanitary napkins are distributed to women during the programme.
