‘Antibody cocktail therapy’ of Covid patients at AIIMS-R

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh has started the antibody cocktail therapy to treat the Covid-19 patients. The doctors of the institute have so far treated six patients with this therapy. The director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Ravikant said that the therapy involves mixture of two medicines. 

 “The antibody drug cocktail copies the ability of the immune system to fight the corona virus and this cocktail prevents the virus from entering the cells of the human body. Apart from this, its use also increases immunity,’’ he said.

The nodal officer, Covid -19, Dr P K Panda said that this therapy can be given to the patients who are above 12 years of age and are more than 40 kg in weight. “High-risk Covid patients who are suffering from kidney, liver disease, blood cancer, asthma or respiratory disease are particularly benefited by this therapy. So far six Covid patients from different states have been treated with this therapy. Among them is a 70 year old man,’’ he said. 

 Assistant Professor, Department of CFM, Dr Yogesh Bahurupi said that the antibody cocktail vial is made by combining two antibodies, Casirivimab and Imdevimab .
