MCD collects over Rs one crore property tax on the last day of 20 % rebate

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) witnessed a considerable rise in the number of taxpayers on the last day of 20 per cent rebate on property tax on Monday which led to the collection of over Rs one crore in a single day. It is the highest single-day collection of the property tax in this financial year. Since the corporation could not extend the period of the rebate like the previous years due to the imposition of the model code of conduct (MCC) in the state, the number of taxpayers submitting taxes increased in the premises of MCD as well as through the online mode. The municipal tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly informed that about 250 people deposited the tax on Monday which mainly included commercial property taxpayers and the collection was a total of Rs 1.30 crore. Since the corporation could not extend the rebate period this time, the tax section remained open for the public for the tax submission on Sunday too so that maximum people could benefit from the rebate. The MCD collected about Rs six lakh of property tax on Sunday. The tax superintendent said that the  corporation has collected over Rs 28 crore in this financial year so far. Property taxpayers depositing taxes from March 1 to March 30 will not be able to get the benefit of 20 per cent rebate and penalties will be imposed on the delayed submission from April, added Painuly. The corporation is quite behind its target to collect the property tax of Rs 50 crore which, the officials claim, is due to the adverse effect of Covid-19 pandemic in the work of many commercial bodies in the last two years. However, the officials are optimistic that the corporation would be able to collect property tax of at least about Rs 40 crore by the end of this financial year.
