Autonomy & accountability needed for varsities- Governor

The Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General (Retd) Gurmit Singh has said that both autonomy and accountability are necessary for the universities of the state and they should move towards self-responsibility. He was addressing the sixth convocation of Uttarakhand Open University in Haldwani on Tuesday.

He said that the acquired knowledge of the students will be meaningful only when it will benefit the society. Youth will have an important role in making national campaigns like Atma Nirbhar Bharat, clean India, digital India, prosperous India successful, he said.

The governor said that the system of Open University is flexible, simple and accessible and the distance education accounts for more than 10 per cent of the total enrolment in higher education in the country. He added that the curriculum of distance education should be latest, updated, effective and relevant.  The text material should contain a high level of knowledge and quality material in very simple language.

The governor awarded gold medals to 44 meritorious students on the occasion.  He also felicitated Satchidanand Bharti  and  photographer Anoop Shah  with honorary degrees in the programme. The Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the higher education minister Dhan Singh Rawat and the VC of the university were present on the occasion.
