More than 2 dozen buildings affected by subsidence in Karnprayag

The Chamoli district magistrate Himanshu Khurana has directed that people living in homes affected by subsidence in Karnprayag should be shifted to safer locations. The district magistrate inspected the areas affected by land subsidence in Karnprayag municipality area on Sunday. He visited the Bahugunanagar, Subhashnagar and Upper Bazaar areas where he also interacted with the affected local residents. The district magistrate assured that all possible assistance will be provided to the affected people.

Khurana said that occupants of homes which have developed severe cracks should vacate the homes and be shifted to safer locations. The affected people who wish to shift to rented accommodations will also be provided the rent amount by the government for a period of six months, he said. The district magistrate directed the sub divisional magistrate to shift the affected families to safer locations. Equipment should be installed to monitor the status of cracks in the buildings. A detailed survey of the affected area should be undertaken by a survey team, he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that a total of 28 buildings in the Bahugunanagar area of Karnprayag have been affected by land subsidence. Similarly, a few buildings have developed cracks due to subsidence in the Subhashnagar and Upper Bazaar areas. The distribution of relief amount to the affected people is being undertaken with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel.  The local MLA Anil Nautiyal, SDM Himanshu Kafaltiya, district disaster management officer NK Joshi along with local public representatives and local residents were also present during the inspection of the affected areas.
