50K girl students to get free cycles

The School Education department will provide free cycles to about 50,000 girl students of class IX in government and non-government schools of the State. The Education directorate has released a sum of more than Rs 14 crore to the 13 districts under the Balika Shiksha Protsahan Yojana for this purpose. Under this scheme, a sum of Rs 2,850 will be transferred by DBT to the account of each girl student for purchasing a cycle.

The State government has started this scheme to encourage girl education in the State. Girl students entering class IX in government and non-government schools are being provided free cycles under this scheme. Officials state that under this scheme, the eligible girl students in the plain areas will have to purchase a cycle mandatorily with the fund allocated while in the mountainous regions, the girl students will have a choice to either purchase a cycle or use the fund for a four-year fixed deposit in an authorised bank or post office.

This scheme will benefit about 50,000 girl students in the State. Our of the Rs 14 crore released by the department to the districts, Rs one crore has been released for 3,492 students in Almora, Rs 45 lakh for 1,595 students in Bageshwar, Rs 72 lakh for 2,533 students in Chamoli, Rs 47 lakh for 1,677 students in Champawat, Rs 1.60 vcrore for 5,615 students in Dehradun, Rs 94 lakh for 3,284 students in Pauri, Rs two crore for 7,075 students in Haridwar, Rs 1.43 crore for 5,021 students in Nainital, Rs 75 lakh for 2,635 students in Pithoragarh, Rs 50 lakh for 1,736 students in Rudraprayag, Rs 1.08 crore for 3,780 students in Tehri, Rs 64 lakh for 2,258 students in Uttarkashi and Rs 2.40 crore for 8,429 students in Udham Singh Nagar.

Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that the government has decided to take this measure to encourage girl child education in the State.  The department has released a sum of more than Rs 14 crore for this step which will benefit 50,000 girl students, he said.
