168 house owners in Dehradun fined for failing to verify tenants

Dehradun police imposed a penalty of Rs 16.8 lakh on 168 house owners under the Police Act for failing to verify their tenants. As part of a verification drive across urban and rural areas of the district, police verified over 1,700 individuals, including tenants, domestic workers and labourers.
The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that all police station in-charges have been directed to conduct regular verification drives of outsiders and tenants residing in their jurisdictions. During the campaign, police identified multiple violations of legal norms related to tenant verification and public order. Singh said that the police issued challans to the 168 landlords under Section 83 of the Police Act and recovered Rs 16.8 lakh in penalties.
Besides this, 60 individuals were also brought to respective police stations for questioning. Singh informed that apart from tenant-related violations, 107 people were also fined Rs 26,750 under Section 81 of the Police Act for other infractions during the campaign.
The SSP said that such verification campaigns will continue to ensure compliance with local laws and to maintain public order in residential areas. Strict action will be taken against those who will attempt to disturb peace, law and order in Dehradun, he added.
