The Valley of Flowers will reopen for visitors today.  Situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres in the Chamoli district, this valley is accessible to the public from June to October and remains covered in a blanket of snow for most of the remaining months.

The valley today is home to over 600 flowering species and rich faunal diversity. Declared a national park in 1982, the Valley of Flowers stretches over an area of 87.50 square kilometres. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Accessible only on foot, the valley has a 17 kilometres long trek that begins at Ghangaria. The Forest department issues permits for those wanting to visit the valley.

“The Valley of flowers is nature’s gift to the State. Lots of tourists, particularly from abroad, prefer visiting the valley. The state is all prepared to welcome the tourists as this valley opens on June 1,” said Tourism secretary Dilip Jawalkar.
