U’khand’s cultural heritage & folk culture has unique place in world: Guv

The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that the rich cultural heritage and folk arts of Uttarakhand have a unique place in the world.He said this as the chief guest at the Uttarakhand folk dance cultural programme held at the Himalayan Cultural Centre here on Sunday.

Singh said that the folk culture of Uttarakhand has been showing people how to live since ancient times. The fairs, festivals and traditions of Uttarakhand are unique and connect the people to their roots, he said.  He stressed on the need to preserve and nurture the authentic folk culture of the State especially for the coming generations.

The Culture and Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj said that the rich folk traditions and ancient spiritual folk cultural heritage of Uttarakhand are unique not only in India but also across the world. The minister said that the land of Uttarakhand has been a centre for Indian philosophy, meditation, spirituality, penance and culture since ancient times. He also informed the gathering about the schemes being undertaken by the Culture department to encourage cultural artistes. Cultural troupes and artistes presented various items based on the folk arts and culture of the State on the occasion. Folk singers Meena Rana, Attar Shah and Hema Karasi also performed in the programme.
