Treatment of sliding zones begins on Gangotri highway

Monday, 07 March 2022 | PNS | New Tehri

Commuters on the Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway will soon get relief from the new sliding zone. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) team has started the treatment of sliding and danger zones at Nagni and Chamba, near Bhinnu Gadera on the highway. It is expected that the work will be completed before the start of the Char Dham Yatra.

The construction work of all weather road in Tehri district is in the final stages. But even after the construction of the all weather road, several roads on the Rishikesh-Gangotri highway still remain dangerous due to which travelers face problems. Notably, the rains last monsoon season had resulted in washing away of about 40 metres of the highway at Bhinnu Gadera near Fakot.

Due to this, the movement of vehicles on the highway was also completely stopped for four days. The BRO has now started work on security in this place. On the other hand the threat of landslide still persists at Nagni.

Considering such landslides, the BRO started repair work on the damaged road near Fakot. For this, a security wall is being installed on the NH. In the past few days, heavy rocks had landed on the highway here. Now the BRO is first working to break these rocks. After removing them, the work of building the security wall will be started.

At the same time, work on the main highway near Chamba has started. BRO junior engineer Praveen Patil said that the work of building a security wall near Bhinnu Gadera has been started. Heavy boulders are being broken in Nagni after which the security wall will be built. He said that the work of building a security wall in Chamba has also been started.
