Nautiyal talks about increasing threat of plastic

In view of the increasing plastic use which is detrimental to the present and future generations, everyone should take a pledge to limit plastic use in their daily life. Social activist and founder of Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation, Anoop Nautiyal stated this at the ‘Say No To Plastic’ event of The Pioneer which was organised in association with the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) and SDC Foundation at the Town Hall on Friday.

The chief municipal health officer Dr Kailash Joshi and Nautiyal were the chief guests of the event besides the senior municipal health officer Dr RK Singh, assistant municipal commissioner SP Joshi and sanitation inspector (SI) Pushpa Rauthan as the guests.

Addressing the gathering at the event, Nautiyal talked about the increasing threat of plastic to the current and future generations with the increasing population.  He said that India has a population of over 130 crore and as per the Central Government’s data, 2.5 crore kilogramme of plastic waste is generated in the country every day. He appealed to people to minimise plastic use in their daily life. “Increasing use of small plastic sachets of various products like shampoos, ketchup and coffee seems normal but it is severely affecting the environment. It litters the roads and chokes drains that cause waterlogging in the city even after scanty rainfall. People should focus on smart shopping to minimise the waste generation like buying a bottle of shampoo rather than buying several of its sachets,” stated Nautiyal. He also asked the people to use steel containers rather than plastic ones to store foods and other edible ingredients. He said, “It was recently revealed in international research that every human in the world consumes at least five grammes of plastic every week. Everyone must avoid storing food in plastic containers, especially in coloured plastic containers.

The colours are nothing but the chemical infused toxins that one may ingest directly or indirectly that can cause different kinds of diseases including cancer. Children should be given their lunch and drinking water in steel tiffin and bottle to avoid any kind of toxin ingestion by them.” He also thanked the sanitation workers of the MCD for their hard work and contribution for keeping the city clean. Subsequently, The Pioneer felicitated the chief guests and some members of the sanitation team of the corporation. Volunteers of SDC and Feedback Foundation were also felicitated in the event.

This event was also supported by Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), Panchayati Raj department, Uttarakhand Handloom and Handicraft Development Council (UHHDC), NHPC Limited and Institute of Hotel Management (IHM). The MCD also celebrated Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on the occasion. Various organisations and self-help groups participated in the exhibition held on the MCD premises displaying the products prepared from the waste generated in the city. A street play was also performed to raise awareness against plastic use.

The corporation also felicitated various organisations like Waste Warriors and sanitation workers for their contribution to keep the city clean.
