Attending three day Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir at Udaipur has probably rejuvenated the top leadership of Uttarakhand Congress and boosted its morale.
The state unit of the Congress which hitherto was under attack from various quarters for virtually gifting the Champawat assembly by polls to the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami the top leadership of the party has now tightened up its shoe strings for the crucial battle. The top leadership of the party has taken a plunge in the campaigning of Champawat by election. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara arrived in Champawat on Tuesday and is likely to camp there till the end of the elections. Former PCC president Pritam Singh would arrive in Champawat on Wednesday and former chief minister Harish Rawat would extensively campaign in the constituency from May 20. Similarly Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yashpal Arya, former PCC president Ganesh Godiyal, Harak Singh Rawat and some central leaders too would campaign extensively in Champawat.
Focussing on the micro management of the campaigning the PCC president has divided the entire Champawat constituency into seven sectors and handed over the charge of every sector to a senior leader. Former Member of Parliament (MP) Mahendra Singh Pal would look after the important Banbasa sector. He would be assisted by former MLA Lalit Pharswan, Godavari Thapli and others. The Tanakpur sector has been handed over to three sitting MLAs Mayukh Mahar, Sumit Hridayesh and Adesh Chauhan while the Champawat city and rural area would be looked after by senior leaders Mathura Dutt Joshi, Rajendra Shah, PK Agarwal, Dhirendra Pratap and others. The PCC president has handed over the Sukhi Dang sector to Ramesh Kapdi, Manoj Ojha, Amodi sector to Jagat Khati and Prashant Bhainsoda. Similarly the Manch -Tamli sector would be looked after by Bhuwan Chaubey and Navin Joshi while the Sipti sector would be looked after by Kaviraj and Rajendra Badakoti.
The Congress party has fielded Nirmala Gehtodi as its candidate from Champawat. She is facing an uphill task since CM Dhami is the BJP candidate from the seat. The by-election is very important for Dhami because in order to retain his position as CM of the state, he must win the seat. The voting would be held on May 31 while the counting of votes would be on June 3 and the result would be declared on the same day.
