The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has received a significant number of complaints against private schools in Dehradun regarding violation of Right to Education (RTE) Act rules regarding admission of eligible students. Recently, the commission has directed the Education department to revoke the affiliation of Sun Valley School in Dehradun due to its failure to enroll 25 students under RTE Act. As per the officials, the commission has received numerous complaints regarding the challenges faced by students in availing the benefits of RTE Act. Several schools in Doon are reluctant to enroll students under RTE Act, expressing concerns about the government’s adherence to their fee structure. Moreover, private schools sometimes object to granting transfer certificates to students enrolled under the RTE Act, said the officials.

The chairperson of SCPCR, Geeta Khanna said that in light of numerous complaints lodged against private schools with regard to the RTE Act, the commission has conducted inspections. These inspections have revealed that several schools in Doon display bias towards students admitted under RTE Act. In response to this issue, warning letters have been sent to the respective schools, she added.

She further emphasised that if any student experiences any form of bias at a school under the RTE, they should promptly reach out to the commission for assistance.
