Regional advisory committee meet on GI held at NABARD’s Doon office

In latest news from Dehradun, the first meeting of the regional advisory committee for the financial year 2023-24 was held at the regional office of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in Dehradun. The theme of the meeting, according to NABARD sources, was rural geographical indication (GI) through off-farm sector development.  The representatives of State Rural Livelihood Mission , Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Uttarakhand Organic Commodities Board , State Level Bankers Committee ,  Uttarakhand Industries Association,  Uttarakhand Gramin Bank and State Cooperative Bank , representatives of Bharatiya Grammotthan Sanstha and Weavers Union Autonomous Cooperative and NABARD participated the meeting through online mode from Pithoragarh. Inaugurating the workshop, chief general manager (CGM), NABARD Dehradun regional office Vinod Kumar Bisht  highlighted the role of non- farm sector in employment generation . Referring to the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act , 1999 and giving the example of Darjeeling tea, he said that the GI Act has contributed to the importance, recognition  and marketing of various products and as a result, the popularity of all such products and sales have increased. 

Padma Shri awardee Rajinikanth, an expert in GI registration, also joined the meeting through online medium and explained in detail the process of GI registration of various products. In the meeting, the managing director of Uttarakhand Organic Commodities Board Vinay Kumar apprised about the process of GI registration being done by the Organic Commodities Board for 11 products in Uttarakhand.
