The police on Sunday organised a slow race as part of the 34th Road Safety Month campaign that commenced on January 15. This race was organised to raise awareness among the people against over speeding. It aimed to give them the message that driving at high speed cannot always win the race as one can even lose one’s life due to it, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that it was a 50 metre race that started from Kanak Chowk to the Employment office junction.

The traffic police had chosen such participants who were penalised for over speeding and other traffic violations in the past along with those who followed traffic rules and have not yet been penalised for any traffic violations. A total of 26 citizens participated in the slow race along with a few traffic police personnel and police inspectors. Singh said, “The slow race was inspired by the concept of the story of ‘The Hare and the Tortoise Race’. We wanted to give people a similar message that if we drive our vehicles within the prescribed speed limit on the road, we can keep ourselves and others safe from road accidents. This is the real win from fatal road accidents that kill hundreds of people every year due to over speeding.”

The number of accidents is increasing every year due to a number of reasons but it can be minimised if all follow traffic rules every time they come out on roads and public places, he added.
