Police impose over Rs 1 Cr penalty on landlords in Doon

The police on Sunday imposed a total penalty of over Rs one crore on 1,000 landlords in Dehradun for not getting their tenants verified as per the rules. The police imposed these penalties under their marathon verification campaign which is being conducted regularly as a part of safety measures ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha elections. 

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh formed various police teams that conducted door to door visits to check verifications of tenants, employees, domestic servants, street vendors and others belonging to other states and districts. During the verification campaign that lasted for six hours, the police verified and collected the personal information of a total of 6,372 people. The police also brought 278 suspicious people to the respective police stations after they failed to present any valid documents.

The police also collected a fine of Rs 48,750  from 154 suspicious persons under the Police Act. Besides this, the police also seized 17 suspicious vehicles and registered them in police stations. The police also took action against a total of 1,015 landlords under the Police Act and imposed a penalty of Rs 1.01 crore. The SSP said that the police are gearing up ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to ensure harmony, law and order are maintained across the district during the elections. “The police have been conducting the verification drive continuously to identify unregistered outsiders.

The police teams are taking all measures to ensure elections are conducted in a peaceful manner across the district. We appeal to the people to register tenants in their respective police stations as per the rules or hefty fines will be imposed on them,” Singh added.
