In order to increase the tax collection and verify the unregistered businesses under GST across the district, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department will take its ongoing campaign to Doiwala from Paltan Bazaar.

The joint commissioner of the GST department in the district, Rakesh Verma informed that a team from the department has been regularly verifying the businesses of goods and services in the Paltan Bazaar area since last month. The team is also raising awareness among local businessmen about GST regulations and the procedure to register with the department, said Verma. He said that most of the businesses in the Paltan Bazaar area have been found to be registered under GST so far while some got registered during the campaign. He also said that most of the businessmen did not display their respective GST numbers as per the regulations but the department has directed them to mandatorily display their registered GST numbers in their shops as well as on the boards outside the shops. He said that many businessmen were not completely aware of GST guidelines in the area like many did not even know that it is mandatory to register a business with an annual turnover of over Rs 20 lakh under GST. Due to such reasons, Verma said that the department is focussing on raising awareness among people in the district first rather than imposing penalties on registered businesses. He informed that the department will start its campaign in the marketplaces of the Doiwala area from the next week and will also set up camp for the locals who want to register their business under GST.

The joint commissioner informed that out of about 1,80,000 businesses registered under the GST department in the state, 60,000 businesses are registered from Dehradun and this number will increase after the completion of this campaign. “We have talked to the business associations of the area about the campaign. Besides verifying the businesses, the teams will set up camps on certain days for the registration process in the area so that people can approach for any doubts or registration process regarding GST,” stated Verma. He also informed that after Doiwala, the department will take this campaign to Mussoorie and Vikasnagar areas by connecting through the business associations of these areas.
