Over  200 vehicles penalised for overspeeding

The Transport department penalised over 200 vehicle operators for overspeeding in Dehradun division. Overspeeding is the main cause of over 80 per cent of road traffic accidents, said the regional transport officer (Enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari. He said that for the implementation of the prescribed speed limit, a comprehensive campaign was conducted by the department in Dehradun, Rishikesh, Vikasnagar, Roorkee, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi from Friday and drivers of more than 200 vehicles were challaned under the campaign.

He said that in Dehradun, the department has deployed three enforcement teams in the city including two interceptor vehicles which are imposing penalties on drivers of overspeeding vehicles using speed radar. He said that besides this, four bike squads have also been deployed to act against overspeeding vehicles. He said that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system cameras have also been installed on the main roads near Asharodi, Narsan and Kulhal areas by the department where the testing process for automatic challan of overspeeding is in progress.

It is being done to ensure appropriate action can be taken against overspeeding vehicles entering the district. Tiwari said that so far, a total of 5,676 vehicles have been challaned for overspeeding by the enforcement teams this year. This campaign will be regularly conducted throughout this month, he added.
