In view of the lack of knowlege in the rural areas about compulsory registration of pet dogs, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start an awareness campaign in such areas encouraging the rural masses to take licenses for their pets.
According to the MCD officials, various pet owners vaccinated their dogs only a couple of days before applying for the dog license in the corporation as it is a prerequisite to get the license issued from MCD. “People who have not vaccinated their dogs for rabies for years vaccinated their dogs especially to apply for the license. The corporation has issued about 4,000 dog licenses so far within a few months but most of the registrations are from the pet owners from the urban areas. We want pet lovers both from rural and urban areas owing a dog to get a license for their pet from the MCD,” said the chief Municipal veterinary officer, Dr DC Tiwari. He further informed that within a few days, the corporation will start an awareness campaign in the rural areas. “Our team will check for licenses and will suggest pet owners get one soon if they don’t have it already. The corporation will give them three days to register for a dog license or else, the team will issue notices to the owners. A penalty from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 will be charged too if they fail to apply for dog licenses within the given time,” stated Tiwari. Moreover, he pointed out that the corporation has collected about Rs eight lakhs for around 4,000 dog licenses so far which has the highest number of dog licenses issued ever in the corporation.
