MCD aims to become Uttarakhand’s first Water Plus city in SS23

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) aims to become the first city in Uttarakhand to get Water Plus city tag in Swachchh Survekshan 2023 conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under its Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. As per the protocol of MoHUA, a city is declared as Water Plus provided all wastewater released from households, commercial establishments, drains, nullahs among others is treated to a satisfactory level as per Central Pollution Control Board norms before releasing the treated wastewater to the environment. The civic body must also ensure adequate capacity of wastewater and sewage treatment facilities. The infrastructure should be maintained properly and cost recovery must be ensured through reuse or recycling of treated wastewater to ensure sustainability, as per the norms. The MCD is currently working on improving overall sanitation condition of the city as a team from MoHUA is expected to conduct a field inspection of the city in the next few weeks.The municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that the MCD is preparing to be eligible to get Water Plus city tag in SS23. He said that it is being ensured that water through sewage treatment plants (STPs) and others are being treated as per the norms in treatment facilities. No wastewater is being released to the environment without proper treatment. Sewers along with small and big drains are also being cleaned regularly, said Khanna. He said that the corporation has also started cleaning stretches of Rispana River from last week as part of their cleanliness campaign for SS23.
