The State’s chief secretary (CS) SS Sandhu has said that the honest taxpayers should not be troubled but those engaging in tax evasion should not be spared. He presided over a meeting with the officers of the state tax department at the secretariat here on Friday.

In the meeting the CS directed that the department should intensify the spot verification drive and for this the number of verification teams should be increased. Asking the officers not to spare the tax offenders, he said that a system of parallel intelligence should be developed for getting information about the tax evaders and the informers should be rewarded. On a stern note the CS directed that action should be taken against the officer under whose jurisdiction the tax evasion is detected. He said that the performance report of every officer should be prepared and action should be taken on the officer whose work is not found satisfactory. The CS also informed that weekly review of the department would be taken.

In his presentation, the commissioner of State taxes Iqbal Ahmed said that there are about 1.12 lakh registered taxpayers in Uttarakhand and out of them there 35,000 have not paid tax for quite some time. He said that on the orders of CS, a special verification drive is being undertaken in the state under which verification of about four thousand traders has so far been done and goods worth Rs 2.25 crore have been confiscated. Ahmed informed that registration cancellation and financial penalty is being imposed on the tax offenders.
