First minute vital for newborns- experts

A one workshop was organised by the department of paediatrics, Himalayan Hospital, Jolly Grant under the “First Golden Minute” programme of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and the National Neonatology Forum on Monday. 

Inaugurating the workshop, the principal and dean, Dr Ashok Deorari said that the infant mortality rate would decline if we are able to provide breath artificially in the first minute of life of the baby. The experts emphasized that after birth if the newborn does not breathe immediately, lack of oxygen may produce lifelong consequences in the babies.

They stressed on the importance of providing breaths within the first minute of birth to achieve optimal outcome and ensure survival of the children.  In the workshop 37 people were trained on the methods of providing care and breathing techniques to new born babies by the Head of Department (HoD) of paediatrics, Dr B P Kalra and lead Instructor Dr Surendra Singh Bisht.
