Experts discuss science communication & popularisation

The Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) organised Vigyan Utsav on the theme of science communication and popularisation as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on Wednesday. The event was held online in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

In the inaugural address, DST advisor Debapriya Dutta emphasised on the interrelationship of science communication and its popularisation for the common masses. He told that SCP is an important aspect in respect of innovation and Atmanirbhar Bharat.  The UCOST director general Rajendra Dobhal said that the science communicators like professor Yashpal had laid a milestone in the field of science communication. He suggested that a pool of science communicators and their orientations should be prepared with the help of DST. The UCOST joint director DP Uniyal spoke on the occasion on STI ecosystem for Atmanirbhar Bharat. He shed light on the council’s science popularisation activities and network of UCOST throughout the state in respect of science communication.  Delivering the keynote address, Dehradun Science City advisor GS Rautela shed light on the network of science centres and science cities across the country. He spoke about the traditional as well as non-traditional methods of science communication with the help of examples. Speaking at the event, Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS) secretary Brij Mohan Sharma spoke on the importance of science communication for a quality life. He also focused on the concept of science for all. All India Radio Almora in-charge Pratul Joshi said that Akashwani is a powerful tool for science communication, while stressing on the need for maximising its use. Former executive director of ONGC Vinay Kumar Gupta shared his experience in the field of science communication while Hemwati Nandan from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya encouraged the students for scientific writing. The INSPIRE and NCSC awardees Vinay Joshi, Kunti Verma and Harsh Sumrav also shared their experience about science commutation in the state.  Scientists, faculty members, researchers and students were among those who attended the event.
