Dehradun police on Thursday arrested a 43-year-old man on charges of committing alleged land fraud of Rs 4.25 crore with a resident of Pauri district. The accused named Mohammad Sameer Kamyab, currently residing in the Patelnagar area was planning to escape with all the money in his bank account but the police nabbed him within 12 hours of filing the case against him, said the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar. He said that the complainant filed a written complaint in Clement Town police station on Wednesday that some men approached two of his acquaintances last year regarding selling land near Saharanpur Road.

Since they were interested in buying the land, they went with those men to check out the property and were subsequently taken to a lawyer who said the property papers were genuine as per the complaint, said the SSP. He said, “They fixed the deal for Rs 11.50 crore and Kamyab registered the land in their names on February 15 this year after which the buyers gave Rs 4.25 crore to the sellers via cash and bank transfers including Rs 2.40 crore to Kamyab. They promised to pay the remaining amount after getting possession of the land. The buyers came to know soon that it was a disputed land which is actually in the name of a Clement Town resident DK Mittal. Kamyab denied the allegations and said that the disputed land is one kilometre away from their plot. But the buyer decided to file a complaint when they did not get possession of the land even after three months.” He said that the police started the investigation and called Kamyab for questioning and subsequently arrested him on the basis of the available evidence.

Kunwar said that there are multiple cases registered against him in four police stations of Dehradun on charges including land fraud and under the Gangster Act.  “The owner of the said land allegedly does not have an heir and his wife also died in 2021. Many land mafia have been trying to prove their claim on the land.  Many people are allegedly involved in this fraud and the police are looking for them too,” he added.
